Welcome to the opening week,

It is the rise of the new breed, that’s right those teams who are new or have been catastrophically re-formed were victorious with some shocking results. Champions Random Rovers were first to bite the dist as despite a level playing field in the first quarter just lost out to the Kensington Crackers whose tactics seem to have paid off as they just didn’t miss a trick this week. Hoop Dogs contested a back and forth game with JRP where JRP were looking to perform the miracle comeback of the century. JRP were down by an astronomical 7 points as the 2nd quarter ticked on but a smooth twist of fate saw them decrease the gap to 2 points at one stage. Unfortunately for them they couldn’t do it all and Hoops bag the 3 points. In what will no doubt already go down as one of the best games of netball ever seen where the whistle was blown like it was Carnival the NEW Westside Wonders look like the team to beat as they came back on 2 separate occasions to win with 30 seconds left on the clock. A fantastic contest against season 2 runners up the Firebirds.

Best quarter: Q4 Wonders vs. Firebirds

Allow me to set the scene Firebirds were one in front with their attack not missing a trick. Wonders with fresher legs made the subs as they went into Q4. A yo-yo start saw Emily and Jo combine to level matters before Anna from the Firebirds put them back into the lead, the same repeated a mere 30 seconds later and Wonders must have been thinking what they had to do. Zara despite her incredible defence was pulled up on a few fouls and Wonders conceded again. Heads held high Jasmin lead the team from the Centre with all players contributing. Throughout the game Rebecca, Anna and Erin made incredible interceptions and whichever two occupied WD and GD in the final Q did much the same. The game now on a knife-edge as Wonders levelled. 4 minutes left. Kensington once again went ahead with the smooth play of Virginia attracting Hannah and Liz in C and WA. Tam put it away 15-14 now the score. Emily and Jo then turned the game on its head Wonders now in the lead 16-15 90 seconds left. A cruel blow as Anna scored but then with 30 seconds left a fitting point from distance from Jo saw all the points come home to the Wonders 18-17 in a thrilling finish.

Jo and Zarah (Wonders) both scored from distance this week

The workhorse

Corinne (Hoops) just didn’t give up like Thomas the Tank engine steam rolled past her markers like they were nowhere to be found.

Centrific

Elleah (Hoops) was flying around as if she wanted to claim her pilots licence an astronomical first performance as she picked up an MVP.
Virginia (Crackers). Had a good battle in the centre of the park but seemed to be controlling everything from Q2 as Rovers just couldn’t seem to find the net.

Battle of the day

C Jasmin (Wonders) vs. C Katy (Firebirds). The cleanest contest on the court (not all the time) as both players tried to get the better of one another. In the end a final push from Jasmin in Q4 is what ultimately stole the points just wearing Katy down with seconds remaining in the game.

Deadly duo

Katy B and Alana (Crackers) just didn’t miss anything as they took down champions Rovers in what has to be a reported shock.

Body on the line

Bodies were falling left right and centre in the Wonders vs. Firebirds game, a little bit too spicy but well controlled as all the ladies wore their hearts on their sleeves. Erin, Rebecca and Jasmin all quite literally putting their bodies on the line as they leapt for the ball as if they wanted to reach the moon.

Commitment

The best intercept of the evening came from Archutowski who slowly learnt the game as she leapt into the sky for JRP to palm out and release to centre Mandi.

Just not happening

I felt the pain of JRP a point was at least deserved after the blues came from behind and never gave up. Kim and Carmen 2 ace shooters were marked tightly by Sarah and Tenille (Hoops) which is what perhaps gave the 3 points to the Hoops.

So close and yet so far

Jenny and Liz (Rovers) seemed to be firing blanks this week which is strange. The GK Ella and GD Claire did an absolute number on the 2 as Rovers had the chances but conversions was not up to par as Crackers got away scott-free.

One to watch

Erica Tyler (Hoops) with 6 in her first quarter as she burst onto the scene like a looter. No shops were harmed in the filming of the Hoops game

Player of the week

Emily Dickens (Wonders) - 10 points, calm under pressure, didn’t lose her nerve as Wonders fought back and assisted the Wonders as they came from 3 points down in Q3.

Team of the week

GK Claire Micheals (Crackers)
GD Tenille Woodford (Hoops)
WD Anna Kealey (Wonders)
C Elleah Bayley (Hoops)
WA Liz Wilson (Firebirds)
GA Katy B (Crackers)
GS Emily Dickens (Wonders)
